  • Zumo 550 on Sale at BestBuy $634.49

    Hi Folks

I was on the advrider forum today at work (gotta keep busy you know ) and saw that BestBuy was having a sale on the Zumo 550.
    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359497

You can read Rev's excellent (adventure) review of the Zumo 550 here:
    http://vampiresmc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=21261&postcount=18

Anyways, the guy gave me a 10% discount on top of the sale so it was 571 + tax = 616. His reason was he gave someone else a 10% discount um okay, Thanks!

The best buy in Capitola still had one or two. The BestBuy at Santana Row had a couple too.

    Enjoy
    Shane

Holy crap, even at the "bargain price" of $616, that's still nearly 3 months of funeral escorts in Chinatown!

        Zumo 550

Before you buy it, be sure to read my comments on it.. I posted it somewhere on this forum... We really need a gear review section...

        A follow up on it...

The last model Garmin sent me (return number 4) crapped out after 3 weeks. DO NOT BUY ONE!!!! The only thing good to say is that Garmin's support is really good once you get past the flunkies.. I have one guy I am dealing with Mathew Lee... He has been on it when sending my UPS call tags and returning it 2nd day air... sometimes.

I honestly think the problems are a result of over burdening the memory. The unit comes fully loaded.. I added a couple icons from the Garmin website and filled it up.. I think that once the memory is close to full, there is no working memory left to process with. I still don't know why all electronics don't come standard with like 16gig on them.. it's the size of a postage stamp for Crist's sake!!!!!

My mistake, I put the wrong link in my original post

BTW, the only problem I've had with my zumo is trying to make it play an mp3 of Homer saying "mmmm, beer.." when I get within 1/2 mile of a brewery/brewpub. but I think this is an error in my gpx file. I've used it everyday since buying it, and played a bunch of different mp3's while changing the map view, re-routing, adding stops etc. No problems yet (knock on wood).

Dave directly above your post is a gear review sticky. That is where you posted your review.

I have heard some people getting good units.. I haven't yet... I am thinking that the problem may have something to do with the memory and the MadMaps.

Garmin sells MAdMaps as plug-ins for it. This last time, I didn't put them in until the last week. It's possible that they fill the memory too much and leave too little working RAM. something I think Garmin needs to address; a memory upgrade, or at least more flexibility in how you use the external memory.

For me, the only real positive thing I can say about my experience with a 550 is that the support has been fantastic. I have one guy I have been dealing with and he keeps over-nighting my units to me. He's a really nice guy... I would, however, trade the cool support and knowing the personal life of my support tech for a unit that didn't give me a reason to call for support.

I am guessing that you have an extra mem stick, does the MAdMaps go there? I've updated to the firmware 4.20 and still no problems. I actually got it to go "mmmm, beer" when I get within 300ft of some local breweries (when I've got the whole state down, I'll share the gpx file)

No... MadMapd forces itself onto only the Garmin unit. Copy protection.. Stupid bastards. The routes they have are not that good.. I was really disappointed. Most of the ones they have here are mediocre..

Let's see if unit 5 is any better. Still cannot believe how small that memory is...
