  • 24 Hours of LeMons - THill 11/21-11/22

Morgan & I will be attending the 24 Hours of Lemons event as spectators this Saturday night and Sunday at Thunderhill Raceway.

These events are held at tracks throughout California year round. The next one will be at Infineon March 6-7th.

If any of you want to help me stuff a Hayabusa engine into this 1982 Toyota Tercel, please send me a PM.

My alternate car choice was a white 1981 Chrysler Imperial coupe for sale in Oakland, asking $250 (CL ad expired today). Add a big rotating radar dish to the roof & you have yourself an Imperial Star Destroyer.

This 94 Volvo 850 in Gilroy is perfect at $500 OBO. Everything that is broken would be torn out for race prep anyway.

What I found fascinating about this event are the severe budget restrictions, the insane rules but mostly the penalties!
Here is a good video of an Altamont race from 07.
    "Highway 17" penalty explained here.
If your car is too nice or too fast it will be destroyed by popular vote!

Anyway, the registration deadline for the March 6th Infineon race is December 26th!

I'm very familiar with the series and may roll out this weekend - I'll take a look at the race schedule. T-hill is not too far of a drive.

Out of your car choices I say:

    Stay away from anything Chrysler
Go with anything Volvo 4 cylinder, rear wheel drive
The Tercel is looking like the best shot. Although you'll have a hard time beating the guy who managed to wedge a CBR900RR motor into a Geo Metro with a chain drive.

Ah, yes, the Geo Metro Gnome has a strong pimp hand. I don't know how they managed to merge car body with motorcycle motor for less than $500, but they won the 2008 LeMons.

I think it can only be outdone with a Hayabusa or ZX14 motor jammed into an older Suzuki Swift. With a rally shifter. Serious Bizness. Too bad there aren't more supermini cars with rear wheel drive.

If you roll out there give me a call or let me know if I can bring you anything from the bay.

But where to find a Hayabusa or Zed-X14 motor?
