If they're willing to take the trek up north, Dubbelju in San Francisco rents BMWs and a few other bikes that would be suitable for 2-up street use.
Sport Bike Rentals is also in San Francisco and rents more sport-oriented Japanese street bikes. Most are not really suitable for long rides with a passenger, but a VFR800 might do the trick.

wow, it looks like san jose bmw has it going onnnnn.......bit worried about my new zealand friend's first ride on rented bike following me back over highway 17.....will have to work on that idea a bit
