  • Info on what type of bike?...

    Hi Guys,
Obviously I am new and I would like some info.
i am stuck in SA, and i have always liked bikes (duh!!), and finally the time has come for me to purchase one.
    here's my dillemma...i don't know what's best for me.
i know i like lots of chrome, leather and straight handlebars. something like an Indian or harley lookalike, but is that really the best for me?
please advise, as i am a novice desperately trying to learn...

SA? If your completely new to the scene, buy a mid 70's Jap bike. You WILL crash it during the first year. Dont worry about it. After riding for a few years, you can get the shiney, flashy bike you want. Good luck.

      Hi Dirty J,

Thanx for the info. Funny, I haven't thought of the crashing part yet. I suppose that's typically a female, want all the glamour without thinking of the reality behind the glow.
But hey, i suppose the wild child in me can deal with a few bumps and bruises.
I am definitely going to follow your advise and once I have my ironstallion (as we call motorcycles here) i'll be sure to mail you a few pix specially for your attention.

anyway, gotta run, hope to here from you soon.

No, that's not "typically a female". That's typically a squid. If you're a female and just "want all the glamour" of riding without thinking of the "reality behind the glow", maybe you should reconsider riding. Don't pigeonhole the rest of us females as in it for appearances. Some of us actually THOUGHT about what we were getting into before getting on a (potentially) dangerous machine.

Phoenix, were you telling us that your stuck in South Africa? Despite the astronomical cost of a motorcycles, I hear that the Transvaal has some of the best riding roads in the world. I'd hardly say your "stuck".

            Wow!!
Firstly, Marra, don't presume that i was "pigeonholing" you (or anyone for that matter), i dont even know you.
Secondly, dont dig into my character, you dont know me.
Thirdly, dont presume i CANT ride, i have never stated that.
yes, i am a novice, but the only way i can change that is by doing my homework and asking around for info on subjects i am not fully educated on. So please, as an experienced rider, show a little compasion to those that are still learning.
Lastly, Nosferatu, the "Transvaal" (which has been called Gauteng fot the last 5 years) has horrible roads. We have speedhumps the size of mass graves, traffic circles on the most incovenient places, (the size of these circles are approx 1 meter in diameter), and potholes almost everywhere. as to your opinion about me being stuck, there are other places except SA that i would like to go to...

Re: Info on what type of bike?...

I had two friends from Suid Afrika, one from Durban and the other from Cape Town. Both of them were really into dirt biks, so when they spoke of the Transvaal I think they were referring to the off-road riding. Unfortunately I haven't spoken to them in 10-12 years which accounts for my lack of knowledge of the Gauteng.

After all these years however, I'm still touched by these kind words once spoken:

"Sit jou kop is die koei se kont en wag tot die bul jou kom holnaai"

We've got more importnat things to collect for now, so you're going to be a while getting back. Sorry, but you understand.

Have you been to South Africa? Maybe you could go there instead? And send us road reports, keep us Boer'd ;-)

First, "pigeonholing" is exactly what your comment was doing.
"pigeonhole - treat or classify according to a mental stereotype"

Second, nowhere did I dig into your character.

Third, I made no comment on your riding ability. I did not presume you cannot ride.

I responded ONLY to the comment you made about "typically a female, want all the glamour without thinking of the realitiy . . ." I took offense to this statement, and that is all I responded to.
