Just about every '09 sportbike I saw had gigantic cans like that. The '09 R1 is even worse.
Speaking of big, here's one of the biggest damn motorcycles i've ever seen:
At it's widest point that front fairing is about 3.5' wide.
edit: I just fact checked that, it's actually 44.9" at it's widest point. Dry weight is claimed to be 849lbs, before you put 7 gallons of fuel and 5 quarts of oil in.
There were a few custom bikes there. One had a completely custom frame, and actually put the rear brake on the output shaft behind the front sprocket:
probably good for reducing unsprung mass or something, but it also looks cool.
