AB 357 anyone? It would be nice to believe it has a chance of passing.

There is no riding worth a shit in the Islands unless you own a Harley (makes ANY riding a challenge) or a Ruckus.

I fail to see how they can enforce a smog check program on a vehicle that was not issued an emissions equipment sticker during manufacture.

I can't believe that a tailpipe emissions law will pass that backdates checks for vehicles older than the year that the law passes.

If it does, it'll only be a visual inspection for smog equipment, which should be interesting, considering the amount of bodywork that'll likely have to be removed for an inspection.

Have manufacturers even set an emission range for all new bikes?

Manufacturers? No. Federal and state? Yes.

Federal and Ca. has been imposing emissions standards for bikes for many years but that only applied to new vehicles. Bike doesn't pass the emissions standards it is not legal for sale in Ca. That's why we couldn't get first year RZ350's back in '83 here until Yamaha made a special Ca. only model equipped with Catalytic converters in '84 (years may be off). My CB-1 has no center stand because it is a Ca. only model and the evap. canister mounts where the side stand would. Bracket eyelets are built into the frame but there is nothing attached to them.

Hopefully it will be only tailpipe emmisions and not equipment. That will be far easier to test for and enforce especialy since the bikes already have an existing standard they have to meet to even be imported and sold here. Without an emmissions sticker it will be very difficult to determine what equipment the bike is supposed to have.

Vehicles sold have to pass not only federal and Ca. exhaust emissions but the vehicle itself must pass a certain standard as a whole. Everything your cars and bikes are made out of emit hydrocarbons all the time, running or not. Tires, paint, plastics, upholstery, everything emits HC's. A new vehicle model must be put into a sealed room where it's HC emmissions are monitored just sitting there not running. Too much HC and the vehicle is banned from import by the Fed's.

So does SB 435 only apply to bike that are 2000 and newer or 2000 and older. Do you think they will start puting cat. converters on bikes now for emisions? I guess it could help with globel warming but for a bike that doesnt pollut that much... HA HA HA thats kinda funny

California Bikes already come with Catalytic converters. I believe they have since 2000.

The '09 bikes have much stricter emissions standards, which is why they have such pig-ugly exhaust systems. Huge Cat's in each.

The new law only applies to bikes that are 2000 and newer. I think '99 R1s are about to become very popular.

Keith's initial post said older than 2000.

Bikes are not major sources of pollution. Emissions technology doesn't control CO2 , NOx is a greenhouse gas and would be reduced... but again we're talking about vehicles that are a small portion of the IC motors on the road. Is farm equipment subject to emissions control? I believe that annual hydrocarbon consumption by farm equipment is in the same ballpark as motorcycles. Livestock also emits greenhouse gas, so there's another strike against farming.
