  • Lithium Motorcycle Batteries?

Anyone have any firsthand experience? Preferably having run one for a couple of years? Pro's/Con's?

I've had one for right around a year now with no issues.

Are we talking about the Shorai's? Nearly double the cost, but also more than half the weight!

Mine's from before the Shorai was available, but yes, that basic tech.

It sat for a while - a couple months or so without being ridden - when I hit the deer, and did fine.

A friend's been riding with one for a year or so without complaint. I haven't bothered yet because I want to see some more maturity in the technology, and I also can make significant weight savings on my bike by eating less.

It might be a good option for your Buell, but I don't advise running one on your RTP. Why? I can imagine you're more likely to run accessories on your RTP with the bike off. Those LIPO batteries produce the same cranking power as a lead-acid battery, but they have nowhere near the same capacity. An '18AH' Shorai only has 6ah in capacity. The 18AH rating is indicative of its comparative cranking power. So if you're sitting still with the engine off, and your valentine, radio, and whatever else on; the battery will drain very quickly. Also, since the Shorai batteries lack a low-voltage cut-off circuit the battery will likely be damaged when this happens.

I've been researching LiPO batteries to run my CPAP machine on motorcycle camping trips. I spoke with the Operation Manager of Shorai back in march, and he told me to hold off, and that in late 2011/early 2012 they'd have a new line of batteries that'll have overcharge and low-voltage cut-off circuits built in. Those might be a better option for an RTP or similarly..farkled.. bike.

In summary: Sportbike/track bike: Yes. ADV rigs, touring rigs, etc: no.

I ordered one for the Buell. No way I'd try to run one on the RTP, way too many parasitic draws. We'll see how it goes.

I picked up a 12-cell Ballistic. Multiple factors made me choose it over the Shorai. a)smaller for the same rating b)Shorai's have been reported to have weak terminals c)a little lighter d)Shorai wasn't available in the 12cell size.

This thing is tiny, and this is for the "larger" 12 cell model. After installing it with ltos of foam padding, I still had enough room in my battery tray on the Buell to move my tools and everything under the passenger seat into the spare space in the battery box.

Awesome. Next time my DRZ needs a battery, I will look into it! She could use to shed a few lbs.

LI cell's VS. NMHD, Ni will power up @ a slow rate and discharge @ the same rate, the LI cell's will give you everything they have all at once and flat line with no taper off of work like the nmh when done. Be For Warned LI Go Bang!!! when pushed but have a good charge shelf life and will serve You well.....if You respect them.

The DRZ would probably be fine with a 4 or 8 cell.

                        I ordered a Ballistic 12 cell here:

Thanks Keith. WOW, a little sticker shock here! Now that I'm getting the TTR ready for Hollister this weekend, the DRZ is gonna have to wait just a little longer.
