  • Venus over the sun!

Venus will be eclipsing the sun for about 5 hours, in a synchronized orbital on June 5th, from 3:06pm to sundown.

To see it, you can project the image via a pinhole, onto a screen or use a welder's mask to look directly.

I figured you guys might have a welder's mask, and maybe I could borrow one... Anyone wanna give theirs up for a couple days after the rally?

    Kinda geeky, I know. :-P

I might have extra's, I'll check when I get home. If not, the glass is dirt cheap and you can use it as a 8+stop ND filter for your camera afterwards.

Make sure you use shade 15 for ARC/MIG and not standard shade 5 for oxy/acetylene or you will end up with some very painful retinal burns.

Never heard of shade 15, my mask does 9-12 and I see others that'll do 13. I agree on using a mask for arc welding rather than oxyacetylene.

Probably my memory is just bad. It's been close to 20 years since my last welding class and I gave my GTAW handbook to Jonah Perez many years ago. When I was last in class auto darkening screens had just come out and cost $500+

It was probably shade 12 I was using.
