  • Dual Sport / light ADV bike recommendations

I am looking to change things up. Currently, my trusty two wheeler is a 96 sportster that is heavily modded to be pseudo dirt track style with lots of grunt. I am craving modern technology, and I have a bit of a desire to get back on the dirt.

My last three plated dirt machines were a DRZ-400s with an SM wheelset, a Yamaha YZ-400, and a Yamaha WR-400. All had their upsides and their down sides. I believe I did the Cal Poly Penguin ride on each of them and they all performed well. I mention the Penguin ride because that is the type of ride I am setting the dirt standard on. I won't be hitting the super cross track, and likely won't be doing any super tight or gnarly dirt trails. In fact I probably will avoid the hard lines at the next dual sport ride. But I digress...

My riding consists of 90% street riding within a 50 mile radius of home. While this is important context, I recognize that for the majority of the riding I do, ANY bike would suffice. It is the 10% that I am concerned about, and they split up in to two moderately opposing directions: dirt fun and the 3-4 hour ride to attend events up north. In reality, we are talking about 2 dirt events per year and 2 long distance (not really that long) rides per year.

I have done SLO to SC (the long and fun way) on the DRZ and I have done SF and back (in one day) on the Sportster, and to be perfectly honest, I don't think one offered anything better than the other when it comes to highway cruising speeds. I felt the DRZ was being stressed, but I was scared the Sportster wasn't even going to make it back (it was bleeding oil pretty bad). I don't think I would have wanted to do either of these rides on the YZ or WR, though the WR was probably geared better for it than the DRZ.

So what am I thinking? I am looking at options like the Husqvarna 610/630 (both TE and SM versions are on my short list), LC4 based KTMs...and that's where I am falling a little short. What else is out there? I know there are Honda 650 and Suzuki 650 options, but they don't reach out and grab me.

I must have e-start. I want suspension that can handle dirt roads, single track, light trail type riding. It needs to be light enough for me to not feel overwhelmed. The 300 lb +/- weight of the DRZ wasn't horrible. I would sacrifice some weight for some highway manners. It needs to have a key and speedo. And I would really like there to be an adventure based aftermarket so I can add a wind screen for longer rides or racks/bags for camping trips.

What input do you all have? What have you seen?

Assuming money is no issue, that KTM 690 Enduro is pretty sweet. Honestly though you could probably get around just fine on a WR250R. They make great little adv bikes and you'd probably have enough money left over to buy either a cheap sport bike, or a bunch of farkles for the WR.

I'll let Adrian chime in on his experience with Husky.

Quality control on the build has been inconsistent (stripped bolts etc..) and parts are a freaking nightmare.

Fun as hell when it's running though

        What Husky do you have?

I should have clarified: my budget is very much limited. I will have whatever I can sell the Sportster for (~$4000) plus $1-1.5k. So I am looking at a $5k to $5500 bike.

Carl, I really like the idea of the WR250 series, even more so the the Husky 310. But as an only bike, I am just afraid that it won't cut the mustard. Maybe I am wrong, but my line of thinking was that a big torquey motor could push higher gearing much easier and allow freeway speeds of 75 mph without much issue. If I could have my DRZ back (with all the cool stuff I had on it), I would be stoked...except I really felt like I was ringing its neck when I was riding back from SC on the long open roads between King City and SLO.

The 2013 650 Terra, however it was produced when BMW owned Husky and KTM has been less than friendly towards it from what I can tell, due to its BMW motor etc...

Now I'm dreaming of the 690 enduro more...

I can't do any of this with my big R1100GS. Hell, I can't imagine any other adv bike that you can take to the dunes, the supercross track, the woods, and the highway. Want.

Yeah. As I typed that I thought "sad the man who switches bikes every three months."

I've had my 2011 Husky SMS630 for a few months now, put about 2.5k on it so far. Haven't had to deal with parts yet, it was set up real well when I got it. However, have talked with the folks up at MotoExotica, where the bike was originally sold & serviced. They've been super helpful & real knowledgeable. We'll see what I have to say when it comes time to get some parts down the road.

Anyways, the 630 is an absolute ripper! The TE & SMS are pretty much the same bikes with different wheel sets & slightly different gearing. From what I've been reading, the BMW Huskies, particularly the 630's, have retained all the radness of the 610's but with the few niggling problems all sorted out. Seen guys with like 50k on theirs w/out issue. I'll let you know how it turns out for me.

(Btw, after I destroyed the Duc & everyone whined about never getting a chance to ride it, I promised I'd let the next one be a total slut & pass her 'round. Any y'all get in the mood to shred a gnarly sumo, hit me up!)

Actually the dealer I bought the Husky from referred me to MotoExotica as a place to maybe get my exploded tail section bits from

Yeah! Both the 630 and 650 Terra are on my list! I would be happy with the 610, and am more likely to find one of those in my price range. A little more research suggests that the Husky has a better transmission (with regards to gear ratios) than the KTM. That is important to me as I have had MX dirt ratios so many times now on the street. Now I just need to sell the sporty.

Josh, tell me more about the differences between the husky and the DRZ. I really want to know about the differences in height/weight and it's highway manors. In my mind, the weight is nearly comparable between the 610 and the DRZ, although I have heard that the Husky gained 30 pounds when they went from 610 to 630. I am also believing that the 6 speed tranny and greater power would allow much easier highway cruising.
